Glasgow Distillery 1770 Unpeated (2019 Release) 46%

First Fill Bourbon finished in Virgin oak/ Tasted: Dec 2019

Aromatic, sweet, juicy and estery apricot, pineapple, apple and barley along with some sweet but grippy and spicy oak. Lovely balance with a subtle heather and ginger note.

The palate opens with sweet vanilla and charred oak, followed by heather infused estery fruit and grippy oak. It’s big and mouth-filling with ginger and barley. Long and sweet with plenty or possibly a little too much Virgin oak, butter and toast but the crisp citrus and white fruit almost balances. Overall it’s very pleasant.

Glasgow 1770 ‘The Original’ 46%

Batch: LCM20 385/ 1st Fill Bourbon/ Virgin oak finish

Tasted: Jun 2021

The oak is a lot subtler than on the triple distilled release thus this shows more barley, minerals, apricot and lemon. There is a touch of creamy oak and slightly gritty and toasty virgin oak but those aromas are staying in the background. Late quince, warm ginger and cinnamon. A much better balanced nose.

The palate opens with soft, subtle oak, barley, estery apple and apricot. Hints of cinnamon and pepper come through on the middle. Like the nose it’s well balanced and some pleasant lemon and mineral notes develop on the mid palate. Long, fresh, mineral and citric finish with lingering sweet barley and oak. Slightly perfumed after-taste.

Glasgow Distillery 1770 Peated Release No1 46%

Peated to 50PPM/ First Fill sherry, finished in Virgin oak/ Tasted: Oct 2019

Aromas of soft heathery peat, sweet smoke and rich dried fruit. Hints of herbal sherry cask and taught vanilla. Good depth with late crystalised orange, barley and malt.

The palate opens with toffee and the lightly herbal sherry. Beautifully soft and sweet, heathery peat follows with hints of dark chocolate, macerated orange, barley and building sweet vanillins. Good balance and length with a long, heathery finish that displays a slight astringency and peppery bitterness which is balanced by the sweet vanilla. Lovely smoky and heathery after-taste.

Glasgow 1770 Peated (Rich and Smoky) 46%

Batch: LCM20 386

Virgin oak/ Pedro Ximinez Finish

Tasted: Jun 2021

A fresh, intense and slightly tarry nose with gritty peat smoke. The PX cask adds a balancing sweetness but doesn’t overpower the spirit character. Hints of barley, dried fruit, charred wood, cinder toffee, cinnamon and walnuts follow.

The palate opens with the sweet and sooty peat along with plenty of winey, treacly dried fruit, but like the nose it doesn’t swamp the estery, bubblegummy white fruit and toasted pineapple. Burnt wood, cinnamon and liquorice on the middle. Long, citric finish with lingering treacle, tar burnt heather and peat. Lovely intensity and length.

Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled (Release No1) 46%

Batch: LCM20 387/ Virgin oak/ Tasted: Jun 2021

The nose opens with the creamy, gritty and spicy virgin oak. Subtle barley, estery apricot and apple notes appear before moving into butter, toffee and cinnamon.

The palate also opens with creamy oak and soft estery apricot and apple. A touch of lemon and sweet cinnamon appears along with some slightly bitter pepper on the middle. Long, creamy oak finish with lingering wood spice. In conclusion: It’s possibly a little heavy on the oak but it has a pleasant mouth-feel.
