Duncan Taylor Octave Glenburgie 1985 (27 year old) 55.7%

Cask 943675/ Tasted: Sept 2015

The nose is taught, herbal, spicy and coffee’d aromas which display an almost astringent rye-like character. Quite youthful and edgy with a touch of vanilla softening.

The palate is as taught and herbal as the nose! A veritable mouthful of first fill Oloroso – dark treacle, chocolate and rather drying combination of alcohol and tannins. Ooh this is a bit of a brut! Intense and mouth-watering finish with a good smoky and spicy finish. In conclusion: A very clean, unblemished, herbal sherry monster. Completely lacking in subtlety for me, but this style of whisky has its adherents!

The Single Cask Glenburgie 1995 (21 year old) 53.1%

Cask AQ795/ Dist: Jul 1995 Btl: Apr 2017/ Tasted: Nov 2017

The nose opens with some herbal, ferny, rye-like notes and subtly oxidised fruit. Pleasantly balanced by some creamy American oak and barley. The citrus and gritty pepper and cinnamon keep the oak in check.

The palate is a bit of an American oak monster with creamy vanilla and lightly baked fruit. Good depth, if a bit straightforward. Hints of barley on the middle but the oak is very dominating. Good length with lingering sweet oak (surprise!)

Claxton’s ‘The Single Cask’ Glenburgie 2008 (9 year old) 57.8%

Bourbon Hogshead/ Dist: Mar 2008 Btl: 2017/ Tasted: Apr 2017

The nose is a little tight and neutral to begin with and almost like a grain spirit, with dried fruit and grass, joined by a touch of barley. With time hints of honeysuckle and earth appear along with some herbal rye-like notes.

There’s a touch more toffee’d oak on the palate long with barley and grass. Subtle, but sharp citrus on the middle. A little short with lingering ok and the dried, grainy fruit returning.

A drop of water freshens and brings out some white liquorice and sweeter barley. The palate is still pretty oaky but the spirit is heavier and oilier, but the citrus notes have disappeared. Still short with the oak following through.

Bourbon Barrel/ Dist: 2011 Btl: 2017/ Tasted: Mar 2017

A pleasantly fresh and grassy nose with lime, barley and subtle, creamy oak notes. Quite charming and classically Speyside with late toffee’d notes which give the aromas some roundness.

The palate is fresh, grassy and citric with barley, white fruit and hints of straw and lightly bittering oak. Good depth an intensity with an alcohol enhanced citric bite in the finish, which does make it feel a little austere.

Bourbon Barrel/ Dist: 2011 Btl: 2020/ Tasted: Mar 2020

Aromas of sweet barley, green apple and honey. With time it becomes estery and floral with pineapple, melon and apricot. Time also increase the oak but there is more than enough fruit to stop the oak dominating.

The palate opens with the creamy vanilla oak. As the oak is more noticeable the fruit is a little subdued but it begins to come through with a pleasant tropical edge. Hints of barley, minerals, grass and lime on the middle. The oak returns on the finish with vanilla cream and Bourbony notes. Light, bitter coffee after-taste.

The nose isn’t as oaky as I was expecting although there is plenty of Bourbon oak here. Quite citric with hints of celery, pastry, barley and developing fresh oak. With time nutmeg.

The palate is soft and quite oaky but pleasantly citric. Good fresh middle with barley, toffee, tannin and some almost sweet corn-like notes. Mouth-filling but balanced with a long, citric, barley and slightly spicy finish.

A pure, treacly Pedro Ximinez nose. Dark nuts, cinnamon, black pepper and yet more treacle.

The palate is thick, syrupy/ treaclly and full of mouth-coating Pedro Ximinez dried prune and raisin. Hints of grilled nuts and bitter wood spice on the middle. Medium length with cinnamon, black pepper and cardamom finish. No spirit character at all.

Deep and barley’d aromas with a faint industrial edge, which to be fair isn’t too intrusive. Hints of lime, under ripe gooseberry, tobacco leaf and dusty, slightly bitter spice follow.

The palate is gritty and earthy with hard barley but also some softening vanilla/ toffee. Hints of lime and gooseberry follow but it fills out well on the middle. Long and citric with subtly sweet barley and industrial notes along with hints of dark coffee infused spices.

A lovely, fresh and citric nose of grapefruit, greengage and lime. A little high toned to begin with but it does settle down to show a good depth of barley, mature oak and a base of delightful tropical fruit. Very well balanced with some nutty and sawdusty oak, oats and malt.

The palate has rather a lot more vanilla oak and less of the balancing citrus. Sweet barley, malt, apricot, honey and sawdusty oak follow along with a subtle lime/ lemon note coming through on the middle. However it’s the mature oak and barley that is the focal point. The finish is better balanced as the citrus finally breaks through. Lovely apple and white liquorice after-taste.

A lovely nose of sweet, violety spices and sharp citrus. Hints of rye-like herbal notes follow along with brandy butter, baked apple and marzipan. The aromas darken as the malt and treacle appears and it also becomes very fragrant with dusty barley and bready notes.

The palate opens with crème caramel, subtle toffee and hints of malt, baked fruit and supple spices. The oak is a tad more dominant than the nose would suggests, thus the palate is a little less complex than the nose. A touch of earth and smoke comes through on the middle and the finish is a little austere, although pleasantly citric with a drying, sweet tannin after-taste.

A beautiful, luscious nose of mature honey and lightly dusty oak. Some heavily perfumed white fruit emerges along with hints of straw, dried barley and a touch of vanilla. Wonderfully mature.

The palate is quite fresh and stony with hints of honey and mature oak. Quite fruity still with apricot and pear. The tannins build on the middle but they are relatively soft. Good length with a crisp, fresh, lightly coffee’d and dried grass finish. Lovely, lightly oiled dry tannic spice after-taste.

The palate is a bit on the watery side and heavily toffee’d along with molasses and treacle too. The sulphur blemish is not as bad as the nose but it is still there! The oak bitters a little on the finish but the sweet dried fruit lingers.

Clean and fresh with aromas of light apricot and Satsuma followed by botanicals and vanilla oak. Unassuming or elegant (take your pick!) and slightly perfumed.

Gentle and botanical on the palate. Quite fresh with some fleshy apricot fruit and a touch of aniseed. Alcohol and the wood tannins mask the finish with exception of the botanical notes and maybe a slight sweetness hovers in the background.

A drop of water emphasises the oils and oak on the nose and does the same for the palate. It is still quite woody and the fruit is still just an impression or maybe a ghost. The finish has become a great deal more sugary.

Initially a touch vegetal on the nose although this blows off quiet quickly. Good chocolately, rich re-fill sherry fruits with hints of raisins and dried fruit. The sherry aromas continue to develop and time brings out a violety note and dunnage floor aromas.

The palate is soft and fruity with chocolatey re-fill sherry fruit, and soft dusty spices. A touch vegetal and simple. It’s ok. The palate doesn’t live up to the nose and the vegetal note is somewhat off putting.

Bourbon cask 9808/ Dist: Mar 1983 Btl: Sept 2009/ Tasted: Sept 2009

The nose is a bit prickly to start with but the crisp, granity orange, apricot and mature honey arrives promptly. It has quiet a noticeable earthy-peat character along with some lovely buttery oak and coastal salinity. Over time a touch of light coffee and wood spices emerges from amongst the fresh igneous morass!

The palate is soft, oily and slightly creamy. Then the granity apricot and orange arrives followed by the generous alcohol. Its quiet complex and grassy with hints of hay/ straw, white fruit and peat, all accentuated by its mineral/ granity leanings, especially on the finish.

A drop of water and it becomes an ‘Oh Yes’ moment! The orange fruit takes on a beautiful liquid viscosity, coating the tongue with lashings of mature honey and gorgeously soft spices. The oak retreats into the back ground, but it is still garanity and fresh with the salinity noticeable, but unfortunately the peat has all but disappeared. On the palate it sweetens and gives the orange fruit a lovely sheen. Now wonderfully mellow, yet still crisp and fruity. It shortens the length a little bit but leaves a lasting impression of saline-grassy-spices on the after taste.
