House of Macduff Golden Cask Speyside 1992 (23 year old) 61.7%

South African Sherry Butt CN223/ Dist: 1992 Btl: 2015/ Tasted: Mar 2020

How is this 61.7% at 23 years of age! Intense aromas of green olives and sherry tannins. Alcoholic but fruity with apricot, orange, oxidised grape, coffee, marzipan and Amontillado-esque nutty fruit.

The palate is intense and grippy with soft oxidised fruit balancing the tannins. Hints of apple, marzipan and subtle but noticeable nutty sherry. Masked, slightly spicy finish, but overall it’s raw (in a good way) and intense.

A drop of water makes the nose lighter but still nutty with more barley and spirit character – citrus, honey and heather. The palate is extremely luscious and very honeyed with subtler green nuts and olives. Still a little tannic with cassia bark and wood spice. Good length with lingering green wood, spice and honey.

Aromas of gun flint and lots of it. Beneath lies some sweet white fruit nd barley but the sulphur is blanketing that.

I’m hopping that this sample was contaminated somehow because this is the worst palate I have come across in year. Murky, musty, vapid and seriously bitter, cardboardy and sulphured. It was so bad I had to spit!

Bourbon Barrel 1408830 – Advance Sample

Dist: Jun 1992 Btl: Not yet bottled at the time of tasting/ Tasted: Mar 2020

Dense aromas of mature sawdusty oak, oily lemon and hints of fern, grass, greengage, pineapple and mandarin. That is a beautifully complex nose with a superb balance of maturity and fresheness. Late straw-like barley and vanilla.

The palate opens with lithe apricot, tangerine and pineapple. Slightly milky and sawdusty oak follows along with a touch of grilled nuts and barley. Wonderfully vibrant citrus middle and a long, juicy, succulent and fruity finish with lingering kiwi, greengage and lightly bittering oak. Stunning balance.

Refill Bourbon Hogshead/ Code: EDI0357/ HL15001

Dist: Dec 1993 Btl: 2018/ Tasted: May 2018

Herbal and nettle aromas with straw-like barley and hints of cider vinegar. Actually it reminds me of salt and vinegar crisps! With time hints of lime, gooseberry and tamarind. The oak is very subtle and allows the spirit character full reign. Unusual and interesting.

The palate opens with some dry tannins and dusty barley. Subtle baked fruit, vanilla, apricot and lemon follow. Less nettley and tart, although the nettle and citrus do come through on the middle. It has a lovely, natural intensity with lingering vanilla, tart fruit and a touch of old marc.

Water brings forward the oak slightly and a touch of honey sweetens. The palate is unfortunately a little vague and unfortunately showing some wet cardboard notes. That old marc-like note in the finish when neat, sort of set off alarm bells. However it finishes with some sweet, almost sherried dried fruit.

Cask Noir Speyside Distillery 21 year old ‘The Legendary Harvey Brothers’ 54.2%

Bourbon Barrel/ Tasted: Dec 2022

The nose is hard and oily, a lovely combination of linseed and wool fat! Hints of old fruit, old rose petal appear. It’s safe to say that this cask is pretty exhausted and its questionable if that cask was any good to begin with!

The palate also displays oily fruit and rose petal, followed by dusty, mature American oak and pot pourri spices. Tart lemon and lemon verbena middle. Masked, rose oil and bitter wood finish.

With water the nose is flat and dull. The palate is wool fat and sugar water.

Sherry Hogshead 65/ Dist: Apr 1994 Btl: May 2016/ Tasted: May 2016

Deep and fragrant, Armagnac-esque aromas of prune, raisin and walnut. Intensely herbal with hints of menthol and rye-like notes. Layered and fresh with hints of gooseberry, lime, cocoa powder and dark chocolaty spices.

The palate is intense and full with plenty of dried fruit – fig, prune, plum and raisin. Lavishly sprinkled with cocoa powder, walnut and spice. Long and herbal with a touch of vanilla and rye-like spices. A little drying at the death as the spices become quite dusty but the juiciness of the malt balances.

Sherry Butt 940/ Dist: Nov 1991 Btl: Feb 2017/ Tasted: Mar 2017

A heavily oxidised fruit and balsamic Oloroso nose with edgy cinnamon, clove, liquorice, citrus. Give it some time and it settles down to show some barley, apricot, rose petal and nutty oak notes. The sherry character becomes quite grapey and almost Pedro Ximinez –like, but the fresh citrus balances well.

The palate is juicy with nutty Oloroso, oxidised fruit and syrup. Succulent but integrated citrus gives it a lift and a touch of cinnamon comes through on the middle with a little tannin. Mouth-wateringly citric and alcoholic finish with the spices bittering a little and a touch of sweet wood smoke, clove oil, treacle, dried grape and heather lingering.

Dilution doesn’t make any changes to the nose but the palate is softer and nuttier with a more earthy character. The spices are dustier and sweeter and obviously it’s not as eye-wateringly alcoholic! However it is incredibly succulent and juicy with bucketful’s of sherried dried fruit and dark chocolate. Now, that’s a very fine sherry butt.

Dusty but fresh on the nose with an almost grain spirit nip. Juicy coffee laced dried fruit follows along with herbal, baked apple, a touch of vanilla and pastry.

The palate displays more of the dried sherry fruit, spice and treacle, along with malt and dark, baked fruit. Hints of toasted oak and drying tannins come through on the middle with again, that grain-like note. Long and succulent with hints of marzipan and gentle Cognac-esque oxidation notes in the finish. Pleasant nutty after-taste.

The palate is a little oilier with subtle ‘off the still’ notes. More cerealy and less of the milky character found on the nose. Still there’s plenty of latent fruit and the alcohol is very well integrated.

A drop of water makes the nose a little rawer, oilier and showing more cereal. The palate is sweeter though with more barley emphasis. Still a little oily and subtly milky with lingering latent fruit.
