Domaine Zind Humbrecht Marc de Gewurztraminer 1990 (12 year old) 54%

Dist: 1990 Btl: 2002

Tasted: Dec 2004

A very intense and stinky nose of straw, truffles, mushrooms, dunnage floors and compost mingle with hints of acetone and wilted roses. The palate is equally intense and stinky with a dominating earthy character. With time it mellows somewhat though! Into a rose Turkish delight middle and finish. A drop of water dramatically changes the nose bringing out the perfumed rose and spicy notes on the palate.

Domaine Grand Veneur Marc de Chateauneuf-du-Pape 40%

Now that is definitely Marc! But it is balanced by a gorgeously sweet orange note. This is very polish and a lot less rustic than some. Rounded and dare I say it almost summery? My this is fruity, full of redcurrants, peaches and cream and absolutely NO manure! On the palate it is creamy, rich and fruity with loads of redcurrant, straw and rose petals. Lovely and smooth, quiet delicate and polished with maybe a nod in the direction of rusticity. Great intensity, good length with a slightly floral/ herbal note in the finish.

Domaine Francois Lamarche (Vosne Romanee) Marc de Bourgogne 1961 41%

Tasted: Apr 2011

Light, vegetal spirit bouquet exuding distinctively mature aromas of loam and damp, foresty/ mushroomy notes. A delicate nutty/ oxidised rancio with hints of mature stewed berries. The old oak adds hints of toffee’d walnuts. The palate is soft and light with a lovely fruit sweetness – mature berry fruits, earth, loam and mushroom notes mingle with the decaying petaly/ vegetal spirit notes. Lovely intensity and bitter-sweet balance. Very long with the wood adding hints of bitter chocolate and walnuts. A superbly, venerable spirit.
