Scotch Malt Whisky Society 52.21 2001 (15 year old) ‘Tropical breezes that fill the sails’ 58.2%

Bourbon/ First Fill ex-red Wine Hogshead

Dist: Jun 2001 Btl: 2017/ Tasted: Nov 2018

The nose is quite oaky and spicy with cinnamon, ginger and a touch of dried fruit. With time hints of creamy fudge and dark chocolate. Water brings out a touch of orange, but also makes a bit homogenous.

The palate is slightly chalky and mineral with a fair amount of bitter tannins, dried, plumy fruit and bitter chocolate. Subtle malt and treacle balance the bitterness. Water emphasises the minerality and makes it fresher. The finish is drying, bitter, tannic and spicy. Water makes it less bitter but it’s still quite dry and tannic. In conclusion: It has its positives and negatives!

OMC3033/ Dist: Sept 2002 Btl: 2021?/ Tasted: June 2021

The nose opens with some lovely mature, sawdusty oak and hints of salt, lemon, white fruit and honey. A sliver of pepper appears along with unsweetened melon and creamy vanilla. The oak does come through rather strongly with time and, if I am being very picky, a little dominating.

The palate is fresh, citric and slightly salty with hints of pepper, ginger and apricot. Good weight and mouth-feel with developing mature oak, spice and honey on the middle. Long and honeyed. Continuing oaky but the lemon and alt notes balance. A lovely vibrant ending.

A fresh and herbal nose with a distinct Sauvignon-esque grassiness and plenty of coastal infused white fruit, apple and pear. The barley is sweet and crunchy and with time a light honey, toffee and strawberry mousse note appears. Lovely nose!

The palate is quite coastal and citric with hints of barley, apple, pear and the subtle ‘toshan-like strawberry mousse note found on the nose. Grippy but supple tannins on the middle and a long, salty, grassy finish. Serious rock salt after-taste!

Carn Mor Celebration of the Cask Pulteney 2007 (11 year old) 65.5%

Bourbon Barrel 43561/ Dist: May 2007 Btl: Oct 2018/ Tasted: Oct 2018

The nose is breezy and salty with a lovely summer freshness. Hints of grass, lime, apricot and dense barley follow along with crystalised rose petal. The oak is very subtle so the youthful, charming spirit takes centre stage.

The palate is extremely alcoholic (there’s a surprise!) and drying with dry/ dusty young wood notes, dark wood spices and liquorice. Really tight and oaky but some beautifully fresh spirit character can just about be detected. Masked finish with a touch of pure, sweet rose petal.

Water opens the nose up beautifully. There’s fragrant barley, apricot, lemon and tangerine. More rounded now and less salty. Maybe it’s a bit simpler now but, it’s absolutely delightful with finally a touch of creamy vanilla. The palate is dense and barley’d with a lovely salty minerality. The spicy oak has been dialled down and like the nose it’s a bit simpler but still absolutely delightful and displaying a lovely balance of spirit and oak. Good length, if still a little drying.

Scott’s Selection Pulteney 1977 (28 year old) 55.9%

Bourbon/ Dist: 1977 Btl: 2005/ Tasted: Dec 2006

Quite fresh coastal aromas. Slightly winey with lots of creamy American oak, mature delicate orange fruit and a hint of cucumber (?). The palate is like the nose, quite coastal and American oak dominated. A bit on the hot side with some maltiness, sort of appearing on the finish. Quite a dry, tannic and alcoholic finish.

Water knocks back some of the oak aromas and brings forward the fruit. On the palate it shortens it but brings out a pleasant spice note.

First Fill Sherry Cask 1565

Dist: Aug 1995 Btl: Mar 2010/ Tasted: Mar 2012

A big, leafy, liquorice infused Oloroso nose with no shortage of alcohol. A very clean cask with dried fruit, lightly toasted nuts along with a touch of marzipan but minus any distillery character as expected.

The palate opens with a profusion of nutty, leafy Oloroso. Loads od tannins, chocolate, alcohol and more alcohol. More chocolate, and more alcohol. Quite a creamy finish though, once the alcohol has passed.

A drop of water makes very little change to the nose. It’s still all sherry cask, although more soft raisinated fruit, toffee and roasted coffee aromas have appeared. The palate has now become very luscious and creamy full of pure Java coffee……… but still no distillery character!

Quite a briny nose with crystalised orange fruit. The fruit does have a slight confected quality along with a touch of violet and very fleshy white fruit. Pleasantly balanced with some malty, barley richness.

The palate is full, juicy and fruity with some barley, crystalised fruit and a light salinity. The middle displays a lovely fresh succulent citrus note and is sprinkled with what could almost be sherry wood spices. Again pleasantly balanced with some old chocolaty wood coming through on the after-taste.

First Fill Sherry Butt  5469/ Dist: Oct 1990 Btl: May 2006/ Tasted: Mar 2007

A very eggy and sulphurous nose. Punished by raw sherry – rubber, treacle, molasses and coffee. Although it does have some orangy moments.  The palate is all sulphurous wood – tannins, liquorice, coffee, rubber with maybe some salt. Could be any old malt, of any old age!

Water really doesn’t do much for it. It’s still all wood. One is left with the feeling this is a trailer trash car wreck of a malt.

First Fill Bourbon Barrel 1071/ Dist: Aug 1998 Btl: Jun 2018/ Tasted: Aug 2018

A crisp and salty nose with a generous amount of vanilla oak. Hints of spice, coffee and barley follow but there’s a slightly acerbic citric note as well.

The palate is quite coffee’d and malty which makes it darker and deeper than the nose suggests and there is plenty of sweet barley and oak. Slightly salty and citric middle and a masked finish.

Water brings out more salt but also a dirty, manurey, sulphur-ish note. The palate becomes very cloudy and tastes like fizzy lemonade! It’s dirty with a sulphur/ metallic note and overly grippy oak on the finish. Shame!

A very intense nose of saline laced orange fruit. Very fresh for its age with an almost fino sherry like character along with some mature wood notes and smoke.

The palate is much like the nose with a huge amount of salty mature orange fruit, cinnamon, menthol and eucalyptus notes. Very long with the saltiness lasting.

A big wave of briney sea air greets the nose, followed by a lovely creamy, fruity aromas of orange, lemon, a touch of peat, barley and a mere whiff of vanilla. Dry and distinctly maritime. The malt gently builds on the palate (and I mean builds!) showing garden flowers, peas, citrus fruit, a touch of peat and coastal smoke. Very intense and tangy, a fleeting finish leaving behind a salty residue.

Bourbon Cask 700741/ Dist: 2007 Btl: 2013/ Tasted: Oct 2013

A huge blast of citrus greets the nose with white fruit, apricot and lime. The fruit has a delicious tropical edge with hints of sweet-ish barley and luscious honey. Really salty and really zingy. Wow this is seriously good and a serious fruit monster. It’s so fruity that the alcohol is almost completely hidden!

The palate is dry and salty with plenty of alcohol (surprise!) However the fruity promise of the nose carries through on to the palate with luscious honey coated lightly tropical apricot, banana, apple with hints of straw, barley and sweet spices. It comes as no surprise that the intense alcohol masks the finish.

A drop of water does knock back the exuberant fruitiness of the nsoe but emphasises the citrus and brings out a light castor sugar dusting. The palate is softer with again less emphasis on the fruit, but it brings out the barley. A little simpler but rounder and less alcoholic! However it is still a lovely citrus, lightly grassy and salty mouthful! Yes, that salt really lingers. Excellent fun!

Bourbon cask 502/ Dist: Apr 1982 Btl: Mar 2009/ Tasted: Apr 2009

Once past the brief hessian and bung cloth note it reveals a majestic depth of rich, mature honey and an intimation of coastal fruit. Very mellow with a burst of late exotic orange fruit and a touch of coffee-cream. The coffee-cream notes build on the palate to mingle with the mature honey and barley. Gentle coastal notes drift in and there is a suggestion of peat and earth. Superb balance between the spirit and the wood – So harmonious! The alcohol keeps the palate lively and the clean barley sugargets a look in at the finale, leaving behind a lovely, malty, coastal mouth coating.

Water really brings out a briny note along with some iodine and Coal Ila-like garden fruits. The vanilla oak also asserts itself. It does much the same for the palate, although it does make the palate quiet sugarcoated, which is why I would opt to drink it neat.

Sherry But 504/ Dist: Apr 1982 Btl; Feb 2009/ Tasted: 2010

A big, herbal Sherry cask. All pervasive and enigmatic. Woody orange fruit mingles with a myriad of wood spices and dried raisins, figs. If it wasn’t for the subtle coastal element pushing its way through it would be a dead ringer for an old sherried Glen grant. Venerable but dripping in sherry infused honey. Some perfumed violet notes emerge as does some earthy dark chocolate, light menthol and bog myrtle.

The palate pretty much mirrors the nose, opening with the big, herbal orange fruit. Mature and dripping in sherry spices and supple tannins. There’s dried fruit aplenty with raisins, figs and prunes. Lush honey coated with spicy/ woody sprinkles! But where has the coastal character disappeared to?

A drop of water makes no difference to the nose, but it makes the palate a tad watery and it fells like it is starting to fall apart. This is definitely a dram for sherry cask lovers and best drunk neat.

The nose is crisp, citric and coastal with lemon, pear drops, peach, apple, sweet tangerine and hints of honey and creamy oak. Noticeable alcohol and with time the oak becomes very buttery and toffee’d. Late cedar and wood sap.

Dense, honeyed and barley’d palate with subtle white fruit, citrus and sweet oak. Slightly salty middle with again noticeable alcohol, which I get the feeling, is holding the creamy oak in check. Good length with oily tangerine, rose oil, cedar, salt and sweet barley.

Water makes the nose oilier and rounder. Less citric and coastal but there’s more tangerine, orange and barley. The oak isn’t as intense as I was expecting. The palate mirrors the nose. Light herbal pot pourri-like finish which is still a bit drying. I think I prefer it neat.

Dewar Rattray Octaves Project Pulteney 10 year old Rum Octave Finish 55.8%

A high toned, herbal nose of  rummy dried fruit and hints of lime, taught barley and subtle honey. The toffee’d American oak sits beneath. With time the rum influence wanes and the rose oily barley and sweet American oak comes through.

The palate opens with the soft rummy fruit and subtle herbal/ agricole notes. The rum is quite intense but some sweet barley, honey, salt and white fruit can be discerned. Good balance with a rose oil and pot pourri finish. Lightly tannic after-taste.

Water makes the rum notes a lot softer and subtler on both the nose and palate. Overall it feels simpler and a little confected with a touch more honey, barely and American oak.

A sweet, spicy and perfumed red fruit nose with hints of mocha, tar and rye-like herbal spices. The rioja cask is very intense and very dominant, as is the toasted and spicy oak, maybe there’s a touch of barley and white fruit beneath or maybe I’m just imagining it!

The palate opens with gritty, tight European tannins and subtler red fruit, tar, liquorice, treacle and herbal notes. Very spicy and toasty oak middle with the alcohol keeping the sweet fruit in check. Long, spicy and drying tannic finish.

Water brings out the barley but also makes the nose very perfumed. The palate is darker now with some heavy, dark rye bread like notes. Lovely intensity, not distillery character thought. Subtle rose pot pourri notes in the after-taste.

Aromas of burnt toast and tight, herbal European oak. Prune, malt biscuits, tart citrus and more burnt toast follow. There’s a huge amount of wood character but not much sherry.

The palate opens with the tight and herbal oak and more noticeable sweet dried Oloroso fruit. Like the nose its quite toasty with burnt spice and rawer sherry notes. Lightly herbal and treacly middle. Dry, intense, tannic finish with lingering sweet tangerine, orange, rose pot pourri and honey.

Water makes the nose softer but also a bit homogenous and confected. On the palate however it’s fresher and saltier. I’m actually getting some spirit character now. Hints of crystalised orange, treacle, barley and lighter, sweeter tannins. Finishes the same as it does neat.

The nose is rich, sweet, pruney with lightly herbal dried fruit and hints of toasty oak. Subtle treacle and grippy tannins follow but the PX sherry is definitely dominant.

The palate is soft and winey with herbal dried fruit, treacle, prune, walnut, coffee, dark chocolate and plenty of herbal sherry character. Masked but spicy finish with lingering rose pot pourri and smoked meat.

Water makes the PX character on the nose and the palate subtler but it’s still PX nevertheless!

An intense, complex nose. Lively, spirity and full of the essence of peat and maritime air, fish mongers slabs, grass, lemon, creamy Bourbon, earth, and a floral/violet edge. Underneath lurks a background of deliciously sweet chocolate orange.

The palate is superb, starting with the luscious, sweet orange and citrus fruit, descending through layers of creamy oak and peppery fruit, cream, nuts and earth, to finish with a maritime twist and smoky bitter chocolate nuances. A drop of water brings out the oak and lemonaromas and the fruit sweetness on the palate.

A pungent and lightly oiled nose which displays plenty of very sweet cereal. Lightly toasted but exceptionally clean. Hints green fruit and citrus emerge along with a touch of peat smoke and some earthy/ woody/ manurey notes. Very complex for new make spirit.

The palate is very alcoholic! Again showing some sweet cereal along with a biscuity/ toasty note. Very clean with a touch of citrus and a lightly, slight bitter spice finish and a sweet, earthy after-taste.

With water (Highland Usige Source) the nose become a little oiler and lightly fragrant with the citrus joined by some crisp white fruit. The barley is not quite as sweet now. The palate is softer and oilier with more emphasis on the toasted cereal. It has a lovely, nascent, fleshy fruit character and a dry spice finish.

The palate opens with some cream-coffee, fleshy apricot along with a touch of earthy-peat and gentle maritime notes. It’s pleasant enough although the aromas are very unfocused and sort of hint at something tropical but never quite get there. Given this is a travel retail bottling I get the feeling that this is a vatting of some young and old spirit that isn’t good enough for the standard distillery bottlings.

A straightforward, unchallenging palate showing more than a touch of caramel. Some gentle fruit and spice mingles with some creamy oak, but the oak has a tired demeanour. Rather lacking in depth with some confected moments. The finish is very maritime but it again it reinforces the belief that there is some tired old spirit here

Old Pulteney ‘Row to the Pole’ 46%

Aromas of old, burnished wood and clean sherried dried fruit are killed stone dead by caramel. This is not a guess as it states that caramel has been used on the label. If you have a bottle, give it a shake and you will see a layer of caramel appear on the surface like an oil slick. Maybe there’s a touch of something tropical underneath, but maybe I’m just imagining it!

The palate is flat, artificially sweet with some dried fruit, buckets of caramel, a bit of alcohol and some bitter oak. Flat and very, very disappointing.

The palate also opens with the slightly sweet Pineau notes, barley, malt and plenty of spice. Very intense, tongue tingling salty and peaty middle. Has the cask finish emphasised the peat or has the spirit been peated to a higher PPM? Underneath lies a lovely depth of apricot, barley and vanilla. A very candied-sweet nose of sweet orange, pineapple with hints of toffee and coffee. It has an appealing Sauvignon Blanc freshness to it with hints of dried grass along with a building gentle salinity.

The palate begins with the gentle saline notes and candied fruit. It seems quite younger. My god the tannins kick in quickly. There are splinters on my tongue! However some delightful Sauvignon-esque white fruit and dry grass rescues the palate. The finish is reasonable (especially after all that tannin) with a sherberty finish.

One question – what has happened to its windswept character? Where are these casks stored? Although the distillery has five warehouses which have a total capacity of 24,000 casks, it is possible that some of the older casks maybe stored maybe stored in Aidrie where Inver House Distillers have their main ‘central’ warehouses. This is definitely the case with some of their other distilleries output from Speyburn and Knockdhu. This may well be the reason for the lack of ‘coastal’ character, if you believe that the environment surrounding the casks influences the spirit.

Soft and smooth on the palate with a good clean sherry influence. There is more salinity on the middle than the last time I tasted this, but to be honest it’s ultimately rather straightforward and lacking the personality of the 12 year old. Normally I wouldn’t put water with a 46% bottling but I wondered if it would open the nose up a bit and it now shows more fragrant vanilla and fleshier fruit. The American is more noticeable and shows a more mature character. The palate is silkier and probably shows a better balance between the dried sherry fruit, bitter tannins, mature American oak and malt. Hints of wood smoke, salt, bitter chocolate on the finish and a pleasant dusty American oak after-taste.

Lovely, rich barley aromas with hints of dusty, mature oak, buttery oak, apricot, white fruit and a blink and you miss it light peat note. Wonderfully elegant with a robust fruit character, along with a touch of salt and violets.

The palate is crisp and gently mineral with hints of barley and dusty American oak. Lovely intensity of classy apricot, white fruit and honey. The oak becomes a little creamy on the middle accented by some subtle coastal notes and peat. Very long with a salty, mineral finish and lingering orange conserve and dusty oak.

Ex-Bourbon American White oak

Tasted: Mar 2012

The nose is crisper, harder and a touch lighter than the 21 year old, but there it is showing a tad more of the maritime characteristics. Still stunningly complex, the aromas gently unwind to show salt encrusted barley, white fruits and macula honey along with some superbly mature, sawdusty oak and a brief meandering smokiness. Yes the oak does grip a bit more given its extra time in the cask, thus the aromas are not quite as voluptuously tropical as the 21 year old, but definitely a bit more spicier though.

The palate displays a greater degree of mature, sawdusty oak, but the wonderful sub-tropical lychee, pineapple and white pear fruit is still there. Again maybe not as exuberantly fruity as the 21, but it is still wonderfully clean and maritime led, especially on the middle. Ooh, now the fruit lets go and explodes onto the touch with a serious juiciness! Stunning length. Gentle barley and a touch of herbs shows through the fleshy fruit and the oak adds a controlled white chocolaty bitterness. Stunningly balanced finish, again a tad firmer than the 21 year old but no less impressive.

Bourbon/ Sherry

Tasted: Sept 2014

A wonderfully mature nose with waves of sawdusty oak and buckets of dusty vanilla enhanced barley. Brimming with tropical pineapple, peach, melon and kiwi, lubricatively coated with blossom honey and intermingling with pine nuts, pine sap, malt, mocha, milk chocolate shavings, a touch of smoke and a light herbal-peat intimation. Damn that’s a fine nose! It’s a real desert malt but there’s a balancing coastal edge and juicy citrus notes.

Oh! That just glides across the palate! Opening with the lush honeyed tropical fruit before the malt and darker wood spices emerge. A gorgeously juicy burst of citrus keeps the bittering oak at bay and allows the 90% pure cocoa to liberally coat the tongue. Extremely long with a beautiful barley and citrus fade along with hints of pine, green citrus fruit and a light waft of bbq smoke. Finally a little honey glazed meat, liquorice and camphor comes through on the after-taste. That’s mind blowingly good!

A lovely, mature nose of tropical fruit – apricot, pineapple and melon with hints of lemon and sawdusty oak. Beautifully poised and elegant.

The palate is soft and buttery with a considerable amount of oak. The tropical fruit and barley  is well buried but just about discernible as is the citrus. With that amount of oak it comes as no surprise that the finish is a little drying and bitter. In conclusion: A pleasant, mature whisky, which has almost succumbed to the oak.

Bourbon/ Sherry

Tasted: Mar 2013

A deep, dark and malty nose showing some lovely nutty (hazelnut and pecan) notes along with briny sherrywood spices, light treacle coated dried fruit and oodles of mature sawdusty American oak. Lightly oiled and stunningly deep with hints of timeworn heather and camphor and a touch of toffee’d honey. Wonderfully fragrant with some light, pulped tropical fruits and beautifully sweet spices emerging. Wow! This is just so complex and evolving!

The palate opens with some light treacle coated dried fruit, dark chocolate and nuts along with hints of  moist fruit cake and some gently building brine. The American oak follows bringing a touch of violet, camphor, subtle earthy-peat an generous sherry spices. A beautifully fresh middle leaving the lightly oiled American oak to come through along with a slightly mature tropical fruit note and a coastal citrus twist. Sublimely long with the lemon rind and salty notes joined by a little light tannin, which adds to the crumbly spice finish. The reality is that words cannot adequately describe the magnificence of the whisky!

It’s presented in a substantial box with a book tracing the history of the distillery and the hand blown bottle, capped with a polished stone stopper, is decorated with silver waves, blown across the glass while the metal was molten. Definitely fitting packaging for a truly sublime whisky.

The youthful and fresh spirit mingles with dark, malty honey, liquorice, treacle along with an almost herbal/ camphor/ rye-like note. It’s actually not too sweet and pleasantly balanced.

The palate is thick and malty with treacle and honey, but like the nose the new make-ish spirit cuts through it. Lightly oily and cereally with a slight herbal demeanour. It becomes more liqueur-like on the middle as the sweet treacle begins to dominate and it finishes quite sugary with a lightly coffee’d after-taste. However as liqueurs go it’s actually rather pleasant
