Dunville’s VR Old Irish Whiskey 46%
Tasted: Mar 2015
Nose: Big and brash with plenty of buttery oak, heather honey and herbal notes. The aromas are incredibly winey – a combination of grassy Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and fleshy Vin d’Alsace Pinot Gris! An almost grain-like spirit note appears to offer a little balance.
Palate: Full, sweet and robustly fleshy. Again very winey with the new world Sauvignon Blanc character making it feel quite bubblegummy. Thankfully there is enough minerality and alcohol to balance the sweetness.
Finish: Mouth-filling and long with the citrus and mineral notes freshening the finish but that lightly herbal fruit really lingers.
Conclusion: Interesting! I don’t think I have ever tasted a whisky with so much winey fruit character. If this isn’t a wine finish of some sort then I’ll be amazed. [tasted blind for issue 127 of the Whisky Magazine]

Tasted: Oct 2017
The nose is subtly honeyed with banana and toffee’d oak. Hints of edgy, youthful barley and a bit of a nip from the grain. Slightly oily with time and showing some of the underpinning older spirit.
The palate is soft, but shows more of the nippy grain and youth malt notes. Hints of honey, banana and vanilla/ toffee. A straightforward quaffer which is a bit short and with a finish that’s dominated by the neutral grain spirit.
