Tasted: Oct 2014
Nose: Pungent and oily and a little plasticy to be honest. A little grubby with hints of earth and herbal notes. There is some young, raw spirit beneath and the sweetness feels a little artificial.
Palate: Oily and a touch cloying. There’s some Gyanan-esque dried fruit coming through, which gives the palate a better balance. The sweetness on the palate feels more natural though.
Finish: Good, spicy finish.
Conclusion: If the nose was as good as the palate it would have score higher.
Pusser’s Rum 15 year old 40%
Tasted: Oct 2014
Nose: Exceedingly herbal! – Sinus clearing in fact with camphor and eucalyptus. Hints of molasses, walnuts, cane sugar follow with a lightly aged rancio. Relatively straightforward but pleasant.
Palate: Opens with sticky toffee, sugar cane syrup, molasses and a touch of burnt toffee. Again a slightly aged rancio of dried prune, date and walnut with the camphor and eucalyptus a lot subtler than they were on the nose!
Finish: Good length with a soft spice note and just enough alcohol to balance the sweetness.
Conclusion: A pleasant rum.
Pusser’s Rum Blue Label 54.5%
Tasted: Oct 2014
Nose: Pungent aromas of slightly medicinal herbs and lightly oiled dried fruit. However they are swamped by the caramel and cold tea aromas.
Palate: Quite neutral with some sub-agricole notes. Hints of wet cardboard and grappa-esque, none too clean straw. Intensely alcoholic with hints of burnt caramel.
Finish: Burnt caramel!
Conclusion: Young, raw, none too clean spirit covered by too much caramel.
