Edition Spirits Kill Devil Panama Rum 2006 (11 year old) 60.7%

Code: RUM0102/ Dist: Jan 2006 Btl: 2017/ Tasted: Dec 2017

Intense and high toned dried fruit aromas with menthol and aromatic honey. Quite acetic with a distinct, natural dunder-like character and an almost young, agricole quality. With time hints of tobacco and orange marmalade appear and give the noise a luscious juiciness.

Thick, luscious and honeyed on the palate with dried sultana, apricot and melon. Juicy and exuberant with again that orange marmalade note and hints of menthol and cigar leaf. Very oily finish with lingering coconut and menthol.

A drop of water brings out the oak and makes it a little less exuberant. Quite nutty with almond and coconut. The palate is still quite honeyed, but like the nose the oak vanillins have been emphasised. The fruit is possibly a little sweeter too, and the finish is nutty.

Very pungent aromas of chocolate coated raisins, this is stunning, quiet heavy and oily with sultanas, dried grapes and figs along with a touch of coffee, liquorice and demarara sugar. The palate is big and quiet sweet with a lovely mouth feel. Intense and spicy (cinnamon and clove) with raisins, sultanas, figs and earth. Extremely long hugely spicy finish

Fresh, elegant and nutty aromas with a slightly herbal/ agricole note. Plenty of fragrant and sweet dried fruit with hunts of demerera sugar. With time a touch of wood smoke, vanilla appears. Beautifully balanced.

The palate opens with the nutty oak and more robust, oxidised, dried fruit. Full and juicy with a touch of coffee, Demerara sugar and agricole herbs. Becomes crisper on the middle as the citrus arrives. Long and remaining citric with lingering agricole and lightly oiled fruit.

A wonderfully dense and fragrantly honeyed nose. Rich, chocolaty and lightly herbal with plenty of fragrant dried fruit. Lightly woody with an almost sherry cask richness.

The palate is moist, luscious and juicy with dried toffee coated apricot and sultana. Full and succulent with again an almost sherry cask like richness and light woodiness. Wonderfully balanced with a long finish.

The nose is quite high toned and nutty with plenty of toasty oak. In fact it reminds me of a grain whisky with that crisp herbal demeanour. A touch of coffee, burnt wood and nutty dried fruit appears along with hints of Demerara sugar, cigar smoke and fragrant dried fruit and oak . Beautiful!

The palate is fuller and lightly oiled with plenty of toffee’d oak. Dried apricot, plum and hints of almonds and peanut appear and again it fills out rather well on the middle with a subtle herbal rancio developing. Long and exceptionally smooth with a grainy crispness and that almost grain whisky-like herbal dried fruit lingering.

Mezan Panama, Don Jose 1990 (21 year old) 40%

Dist: 1990 Btl: 2011/ Tasted: Sept 2011

A lovely luscious and elegant nose opening with a slightly botanical, agricole rancio along with hints of oily dried fruit, roasted coffee beans plus hints of coconut and toffee.

The palate is full and oily, but it retains a wonderful elegance. It opens with delightfully sweet sultanas and dried banana. The flavours continue to emerge on the middle – Coffee, milk chocolate, coconut and hints of the botanical/ agricole rancio. Lovely length with a distinct, sun dried raisin finish.
