Batch 3 – Bourbon/ Sherry

Tasted: Jan 2017

The nose displays mature, baked fruit, barley and straw. A subtle honey note adds some sweetness and with time hints of heather and violet.

The palate is mellow and supple with baked fruit, vanilla and straw. Fills out well on the middle. Good length with hints of spice and the oak bittering a little. In conclusion: Not the most complex of whiskies, but pleasant enough.

Kininvie 1990 (25 year old) Special Release #1 ‘The First Drops’ 63.2%

UK Single Bourbon Cask number 21

Dist: Jul 1990 Btl: 2015/ Tasted: Feb 2016

An intense and slightly soapy nose with perfumed white fruit and barley. Hints of apricot and minerals and a touch of fudgy oak.

The alcohol is very intrusive and drying on the palate. Hints of apricot, straw, white fruit, barley and vanilla oak follow. Medium length and quite malty on the finish.

With water the nose opens up and loses the soapiness, which is replaced by a subtle tropical fruit character and a touch of honey. The palate is still malty and oilier with a touch of linseed oil and those tropical, estery fruit notes found on the nose. Hints of citrus, nutty oats and vanilla. Good length with lingering vanilla and a good dollop of spice.
