St Lucian Rum Tasting Notes

Elements 8 Platinum 40%

Tasted: Sept 2013

A lightly pungent and fleshy nose with hints of molasses and vanilla. Quite creamy but a little straightforward.

The palate is light, quite elegant if simple with a touch of creamy vanilla, molasses, warm spice along with a light nuttiness. Very soft and eay going with the spices lingering.

Tasted: Apr 2013

A light and elegant nose with vanilla shortcake drizzled in lightly honeyed milk chocolate. The chocolaty note is quite subtle and there is some crisp, slightly grainy continuous still spirit notes to balance and add freshness. With time it becomes quite earthy with a nut kernel note.

The palate is quite sweet opening with light coffee, toffee, vanilla and milk chocolate. Again like the nose the grainy continuous still spirit balances. Quite full with a lovely lightly molassesed Pot Still intensity on the middle which fades to allow the cocoa nut kernel and caramel notes to return.

Re-Tasted: Oct 2014

Pungent column still dried fruit aromas mingle with a touch of molasses, gentle, dusty chocolate, sweet vanilla and sweet spices.

The palate is full and chocolaty with crisp column still notes balancing. The darker molasses notes come through on the middle. Lovely intensity of pure, dusty chocolate and dried fruit. Good length with the dried fruit lingering along with some slightly bitter spices and a touch of coconut.

Elements 8 Spiced 40%

Tasted: Sept 2013

The nose is overwhelmed by aniseed, clove, ginger and allspice. There are hints of dried fruit, orange peel, molasses and a touch of toasted caramel, but its spice 1 rum 0…!

The palate is soft and spicy. A little on the watery side with hints of citrus and plenty of cinnamon, clove, aniseed, liquorice and allspice. The spice build pleasantly and linger along with a touch of sweet orange but there is a distinct lacking in the rum flavours for me.

Bourbon/ Chateau Lafleur – Limited release of 1650 bottles

Tasted: Feb 2010

A lovely, oily, almond and marzipan laced nose. The slight dried fruit rancio plays second fiddle to the American oak vanillins but the spirit fights back with notes of almost medicinal camphor, menthol, iodine and fisherman’s friend notes. The Lafleur cask adds it’s expected hard winey notes on top.

The palate is hard edged and mentholated. Lightly oiled dried fruit rancio springs out of the alcohol and like the nose there is an intensity of camphor, iodine and fisherman’s friend notes. Very long and leafy with a touch of old rose petals and tongue tingling spices.
